Every time I try to use Windows 8/8.1, my heart screeches, “Give me my start menu back!!!”. I then convince myself that I would get used to the new metro-style tile-based programs screen. But this one is tough. Microsoft has brought back the start button in Windows 8.1. But most of us were expecting the classic start menu too with the start button, as in Windows 7. Clicking on the start button in Windows 8.1 instead shows the tile-based start screen. What’s worse is that it covers the whole screen. Only to launch a program?
We never realized that this was an opportunity for us until last week our customer Carl Lum wrote:
Since moving to a Windows 8 machine, I find I rely on RecentX even more, as it no longer has the same application finder as Win 7 (and using the Win 8 Metro interface on a desktop is extremely annoying)
Wow! RecentX would be so much more useful in Windows 8/8.1 OS. It would completely avoid the tile-based start screen and let you find and launch an app faster because it provides the programs list similar to Windows 7. See the picture below:
RecentX is not just an app launcher. It helps you find & launch files, folders & bookmarks too. There are some really cool advantages of RecentX. I strongly recommend that you read more about it on RecentX’s home page. You can even try it for free to see how it saves loads of manual tedious tasks, time & money.
Just released a new update of RecentX (Launcher for Windows) – version 3.0.16. It fixes some bugs & improves the over all experience. The fixes adds more convenience by improving the usability of the product.
Here is the list:
By default, website history is now disabled. We found that this feature is used rarely. Only bookmarks will be listed.
By default, tags bar appear below the find text box to make it more visible & easily accessible.
Pressing F7 to view All or Recent items cleared the keywords from the Find text box, so the user had to type the keywords again. This bug is fixed.
Pressing F5 (to refresh) or F10 (to get details for network items) also cleared the keywords from the Find text box, so the user had to type the keywords again. This has been fixed.
When changing display resolution or attaching additional display monitor, the sidebar is lost. This has been fixed.
Renamed file was not added to the list. This has been fixed.
Scrollbars in RecentX did not work on Windows 8. This has been fixed.
RecentX crashed at a particular point due to corrupted data. This has been fixed.
If you aren’t using RecentX yet, watch this interesting demo video to learn how RecentX Launcher app can really help you being comfort in your daily computing.

As you know, Internet banking websites do not let browsers to store the bank account numbers (or customer ids) and passwords on a local machine.
Each time, we need to type the complete customer id and password manually. It becomes complicated when we have to access multiple bank accounts.
How to solve this?
To easily access any bank information, I attach a sticky note (using Notezilla) on the bank’s website with all the required bank information from multiple accounts. Whenever I access the bank’s website, the sticky note pops up. This is very, very convenient. I copy the required info from the sticky note and paste it into the sign-in form.
Security concerns? The information inside a sticky note is stored locally on your system. It does not travel through the Internet even when you stick the note to the website. So you don’t have to worry about it at all.
Password Hints: Moreover, bank sites require you to change the password every few days. It is tough to remember the last password you had set. So I add password hints also into the sticky note for each account. Make sure your password hints are not very obvious :)
You may obscure the information in the sticky note to your satisfaction. Additionally, you can even lock the sticky note using Notezilla so that the data is encrypted on the local machine too.
If you are new to Notezilla, this video will guide you to create your first desktop sticky note and learn some basic features.

To create a sticky note in Notezilla, right-click on Notezilla icon in the taskbar and choose ‘New Note’ from the menu. A new note is placed on Windows deskop.
Good thing about sticky notes is that they are quick to create and access compared other kinds of notes software.
Type something inside the note. Website links (hyperlinks) can also be added to sticky notes.
You will notice that the sticky note resizes automatically according to the size of the content inside it.
A sticky note in Notezilla can have a separate title. By default, the title is the same as the first line of the sticky note. However, you can press F2 or right-click and choose ‘Add Title’ to add your own title.
When you select a sticky note you will also see the Note Toolbar sliding up with multiple options: Stay On Top, Hide Note, Roll Up/Down Note and Trash Note
Stay On Top is very, very useful when collecting notes or referring to existing notes while working with another app. It keeps the sticky note always on top of other programs.
Hide Note hides the sticky note from the desktop which you can bring it up again from the Notes Browser or by using the ‘Show All Notes’ option from Notezilla menu.
Roll Up/Down Note saves desktop space and makes it cleaner by showing only the title of the note and not the entire content. Also lets you hide some sensitive information from onlookers passing by.
Trash Note sends the note to Trash memoboard, basically recycle bin for sticky notes.
Improved ‘Paste only new or modified files’ The new update can now auto-detect new & modified files. When you choose the option ‘Paste only new or modified files,’ you don’t have to specify the modified/created dates (as in the previous versions). Copywhiz will determine these automatically and copy just the changed files. Backing up files becomes very easy with this new feature. The process of selecting dates was pretty tedious. Though, the option to copy files based on a specific date also exists.
Date variables in destination folder You can use date variables such as %year%, %month%, %day%, %hour% & %minute% as part of destination folder address to dynamically create new destination folder each time. Good for taking backups.
Destination folder auto-filled When using the ‘Paste Advanced’ option, the destination folder is auto-filled. You don’t have to select the destination folder separately.
Multiple destination folders list grows automatically When using ‘Paste to multiple folders‘ option, the destination folder is automatically added to existing list of destination folders. You don’t have to separately add each destination folder.
Run Copywhiz from Copywhiz menu in Windows Explorer It is now possible to launch Copywhiz directly from the Copywhiz menu using the ‘Run Copywhiz’ menu. Use this to open & run a project faster.
Windows Libraries fix Copywhiz did not work inside folders under Libraries (Windows Libraries). Now it works.
Often, we find that a single tool does not meet all our needs. One software tool may seem to be a competitor to another. But we may need both of them at different times to serve different purposes.

Notezilla & Evernote fall in such category. For taking quick notes on 3M Post-It(r) like sticky notes, setting reminders, letting them stay on Windows desktop for quick reference, attaching sticky notes to websites, documents, folders, emails etc Notezilla is a better choice. For creating notes with heavier content (media etc), Evernote may be a preferred. Both tools may be compared at different levels. However, this is not the point of this post.
This article mainly focuses on how to send a sticky note to Evernote from within Notezilla.
It is simple. Notezilla allows you send a note to another contact using his/her email address. Evernote gives every user a unique email address. You have to add a contact in Notezilla having Evernote’s email address and send notes to this contact.
Thanks to Kevin, who shared this use case with us:
I really like Notezilla 8 and Notezilla.net! I use Evernote and collect massive amounts of information for my work, I use Zendone for my taks and project management. Zendone has the best evernote integration I have found and for me works really well. The one thing I have always had one challenge and that’s getting a quick piece on information, not or task into Evernote. The Notezilla 8 email feature was my answer, I just setup a contact for (“notebook”, Evernote, “evernote email address”) and it worked perfectly. This will allow me to uninstall at least 2 other programs of a much lesser functionality. Really great work. It would be nice though to select how what or how much of the graphics will be sent with the note. Since, I’m actually sending it to one of my own programs, I don’t need the fancy graphics. Notezilla 8 and Notezilla.net will be one of the best purchases I have made in a while. Thanks again,
We are pleased to inform you that we just released Notezilla version 8.0.18 that allows you to send sticky notes instantly to another computer over local network (LAN). You would use either a computer name or IP address to send a sticky note to another Notezilla user.

Here is a short video showing how to setup & use this feature in Notezilla.
The advantage of sending notes directly over LAN is that the other computer receives the sticky note instantly. It is faster than even email communication. Also, this method works better for companies that are more concerned about privacy & security. Sticky notes sent over the local network do not use the Internet. All communication happens within the private network itself.
Since this feature is not dependent on the Notezilla.Net cloud service, you don’t have to subscribe to the Notezilla. Net service if you are not using any of its features (Sync, Phone access, Sending note as email, or Sending a note to contact over the Internet).
Earlier builds of version 8 also allowed to send sticky notes to another Notezilla user. But it depended on the Notezilla.Net cloud service.
You would use this feature 1) To send sticky notes to another contact who is not in the same network, 2) To send sticky notes to another contact who may be offline 3) To send sticky notes as email.
Allow Notezilla through Windows Firewall
Make sure first to configure your PC firewall to allow the running of Notezilla. The firewall on the PC might sometimes not allow to send or receive notes.
You can search for a firewall in the Windows search box, and you will see “Allow an app through Windows Firewall.” Choose this option and enable Notezilla. If Notezilla is not listed, then click on ‘Allow another app’ and add Notezilla.
If you are using any other Firewall tool (usually included with Anti-Virus software), then you will have to configure that firewall.
Make sure you do this on both sending and receiving computer.
Another significant advantage of using Notezilla.Net service is that you can access your sticky notes from your phone or tablet (iPhone, Android, iPad, Windows Phone, etc.) using the Notezilla.Net web app.

‘Sticky Notes’ for Windows is simple, does its job, and it is free.
But then, we always expect more of the things we get, especially if there is an advanced or better alternative out there. Digital sticky notes are capable of many more things. They are not meant to stay idle on your Windows desktop.
This post is for all of you who want more out of your sticky notes experience, all of you who want additional features from digital sticky notes and a nudge to those users requesting Windows to look beyond the basic features that the default Sticky Notes app provides.
So, is there any better or maybe more advanced alternative or replacement for the Windows Sticky Notes? Yes, there is!
Notezilla, a sticky notes software for Windows & phones, has demonstrated extra-ordinary potential of sticky notes.

Below is the feature comparison between Notezilla & Sticky Notes for Windows. You may click individual links in the ‘Features’ column for more details.
Sticking a sticky note to a single web page is pretty straight forward in Notezilla. However, sometimes you may want to have the sticky note always visible for all pages of a website.
Example: You may be researching multiple products sold on a website, like eBay, Amazon, etc.
Watch this short video that describes this feature:
Notezilla shows & hides a sticky note based on the title of any window (Internet Browser, Windows Explorer, or any program window). When associating a window with a sticky note, you can edit the window title & add wildcard asterisk (*) before the window title, after the window title, or on both sides of the title.
To edit a window title, double click on it & add asterisks as per your requirements.
As shown in the above picture, the sticky note will stick to all pages of the Amazon.com website.

Today I am going to show you a self-invented technique that ensures that you take up & complete those ‘Do-it-later‘ low priority tasks. It has been working well for me.
At work or home, often, we have a list of tasks that we categorize under ‘Do-it-later.’ But, just like ‘Tomorrow never comes‘, even ‘Later never comes‘. Because you will always have some high-priority tasks precede the low-priority ones.
Unless you add some importance to the task & schedule it for a particular day, you will (almost) always find it getting dragged to the future.

Here is a technique:
STEP 1: List all your ‘Do-it-later‘ tasks in a task-management/note-taking tool. Make sure your tool supports reminders. I am using Notezilla sticky notes app for this purpose.
I added all the tasks to a checklist sticky note in Notezilla & set the note title to ‘Take one task today’. The title needs to be motivating. Don’t set the title to ‘Do it later’ :).
STEP 2: Set a recurring reminder on that note so that you are reminded every day or every weekend. That’s it. When setting a reminder, choose that time of the day when you are most likely to pick a less-important task.
Now, when you are reminded, choose any task that you can start on that day. You don’t need to complete the job that day. You can just set the momentum by starting it. The important part is that you only have a focus on one task at this instance.
The advantage of listing all tasks in a single note is that you have a choice to pick any of the tasks based on the amount of free time you have on that particular day.
This method looks simple but it is very effective. One – All the tasks are listed in a single place, Two – You are forced to pick a task & Three – It gives you the liberty to pick any one task based on your convenience.
Of course, no tool or technology can conquer man’s laziness :). When you are reminded of these tasks everyday/weekend, your discipline & commitment will decide the success of this technique.
