Sticking a note to Windows File Explorer

Many of our users had this question- “Using Notezilla, how do I stick notes to folders in Windows Explorer?”.

The process of sticking notes to a folder is the same as sticking notes to any other website or document using Notezilla. However, to make it work correctly, there is a setting in Windows Explorer that needs to be enabled.

We have a short video that explains all the steps:

Notezilla sticks sticky notes to different web pages, documents, folders & emails based on the title of the window. In the case of Windows Explorer, by default, the title of the window is the folder name. So here comes the problem. If you have multiple folders with the same name, then the sticky note would show up on all those folders because of the same window title, which we do not want.

To solve this, we have to enable a setting in Windows File Explorer – “Display the full path in the title bar.”

On Windows 10/7, Open the file explorer and click on the ‘View’ option and select ‘Folder Options.’

Under the View tab of the folder options, you would also see a note “Classic theme only” against this setting. It only means that the full path will be shown only in the Classic Windows theme. Other themes will use the full path internally (which is what Notezilla requires).

Just enable the option mentioned above and also depicted in the below picture.

That’s it. You are now all set and running.

In the latest build of Notezilla – 8.0.15, we added an easier way to show and hide the desktop sticky note from any memoboard.

In the earlier builds, one would have to explicitly go to the ‘On desktop’ filter to browse all desktop sticky notes. This function was harder than the previous version Notezilla 7.0. But we have made it better in Notezilla 8.0.15.

How to show the desktop sticky note from any memo board.

From the Notes Browser, select the sticky note that is stuck to the Windows desktop. Then click on the ‘Stick to Desktop’ toolbar button and choose ‘Show the desktop note.’

Alternatively, you can also right-click on the note and choose ‘Stick to Desktop -> Show the desktop note’ from the menu.

This last week I experienced a major computer “crash” and lost everything including my information about my Notezilla application. Dear Notezilla users,

The ‘Show Desktop’ icon in the Windows taskbar intends to show the complete desktop without any windows. This icon includes Notezilla sticky notes too. Clicking on the ‘Show Desktop’ icon will hide all sticky notes also.

For this reason, Notezilla installs another icon called ‘Bring Notes On Top’ in the same taskbar. Clicking on this icon will bring the notes on top of all the open windows. Alternatively, you can use the hotkey Ctrl+Shift+T to bring the notes on top.

By default, Notezilla comes with English language dictionaries. Here is a trick suggested by one of our customers ‘RM’ to make Notezilla work with Spanish, French, German, Italian & Dutch dictionaries.

I found one solution through Jarte 4.1 from Carolina Road Software.

Jarte is a free WordPad Word Processing Engine (.tlx,.clx, .dic) that includes these spelling dictionaries: English (American, British, & Canadian), Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Dutch.

Install Jarte on C:\ Disk and copy the two french spelling files
(sscefr.tlx and sscefr2.clx) in C:\Conceptworld\Notezilla\Dictionaries
and then, change the Main Dictionary language inside Notezilla Spelling Options for French (Canadian or European).

For example, try a simple text in French like Ceci est un Essai (This is a test), with these errors Cecci esst un esssai, and the french spelling dictionary will correctly suggest Ceci est un Essai.

Often we get support queries that say ‘My notes are gone. What should I do?’.

In all the cases we have seen, there was nothing to panic. The data did not get corrupted, or the data was not lost. It just misplaced due to some change in configuration settings (Windows profile, moving of folders, reinstallation, etc.)

Here are the different things you need to try when you do not find your notes:

May be the sticky notes are just hidden.

Right click on Notezilla icon in the taskbar (next to the clock) and choose Desktop Notes->Show All Notes.

May be the sticky notes are off your desktop

Sometimes, when changing the display resolution of your desktop, the notes go off the desktop. Right-click on the Notezilla icon in the taskbar (next to the clock) and choose Desktop Notes->Layout->Stickers.

May be Notezilla is not seeing the right data folder.

1. Go to Notezilla’s preferences. To access Notezilla’s Preferences, go to the Notes Browser, choose Advanced->Preferences from the menu.
2. Click on the Advanced tab and note the data folder where Notezilla is looking for the notes data.
3. Exit Notezilla.
4. Search your whole computer (all drives) for Notes.db file. Check the size of this file and its date modified. Find the biggest file and the latest one. Copy this file to the above data folder.
5. Launch Notezilla and check if you see your sticky notes.

May be the backup folder has your notes data.

Notezilla keeps five copies of the backup under the backup subfolder.

Windows 10: C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Application Data\Conceptworld\Notezilla\backup\
Windows 8/7: C:\Users\(user name)\AppData\Roaming\Conceptworld\Notezilla\backup\

Each copy is stored in a subfolder, date wise. Go to each folder and check the size and date of the Notes.db file. Find the biggest file and the latest one. Copy this file to the above data folder. To know the exact path of the data folder, go to Notezilla Preferences. To access Notezilla’s Preferences, go to the Notes Browser, choose Advanced->Preferences from the menu. The Advanced tab will show the right data folder path.
