Troubleshooting sending of sticky notes over network due to Firewall restrictions

Sending sticky notes over a network using Notezilla is very easy.

Watch this short video to learn how to do this:

For more tutorial videos, check out this page.

But your firewall settings and other network configuration can make it appear like a complicated task.

You may not be able to send and receive sticky notes. Or you may be able to send but not receive sticky notes.

Here is the most common cause of such problems: Firewall is blocking the program. Make sure that you have configured your firewall program to allow Notezilla/QNP to communicate over the network.

Allow Notezilla through Windows Firewall

Make sure first to configure your PC firewall to allow the running of Notezilla. The firewall on the PC might sometimes not allow to send or receive notes.

You can search for a firewall in the Windows search box, and you will see “Allow an app through Windows Firewall.” Choose this option and enable Notezilla. If Notezilla is not listed, then click on ‘Allow another app’ and add Notezilla.

If you are using any other Firewall tool (usually included with Anti-Virus software), then you will have to configure that firewall.

Make sure you do this on both sending and receiving computer.

You can refer to the following articles for further information:

Windows 10/8/7: Allow a program to communicate through Windows Firewall

Remember: You must configure the firewalls on all computers that need to send and receive sticky notes.

  1. If you are using Notezilla, you must make sure that the ‘Accept Notes Over Network’ option is enabled on all the computers. To access this option, right-click on Notezilla’s icon in the Windows taskbar and choose ‘Notezilla Browser’ from the menu. In Notezilla Browser, click on the Advanced menu and enable ‘Accept Notes Over Network.’

  2. Your computer may be running more than one firewall program. If you are using a third-party firewall program, you must make sure that the default Windows Firewall is disabled. You must have only one firewall program running. If you wish to run multiple firewall programs, then you must make sure that you have allowed Notezilla in all firewalls

Restoring QNP Notes Data from Backup

By default, Quick Notes Plus (QNP) keeps backup copies of its notes data inside the “Backup” subfolder under the actual data folder (My Documents\My Notes).

QNP keeps five copies of the notes data under the “Backup” subfolder. Each copy in a separate dated folder.

To restore notes data from a dated backup folder, follow the below steps:

  1. Exit QNP
  2. Copy all the files from the dated backup folder (example: Backup\2007-05-04\) to the actual data folder (My Documents\My Notes)
  3. Launch QNP. You must see all your notes successfully restored

Importing QNP sticky notes in to NoteZilla

Whenever you install Notezilla over an existing copy of QNP, it automatically imports all the notes. As a side note, remember that Notezilla installs as a separate product. So you can easily try out Notezilla if it suits your needs. If not, you can continue to use QNP (the data remains intact).

In some cases, you may have to import QNP notes into Notezilla manually.

Please follow the below steps to import all the notes from QNP to Notezilla.

  1. Go to Notezilla’s data folder and delete all the files and folders (To know the exact data folder, go to Advanced->Preferences (Advanced Tab) in Notezilla’s Notes Browser). WARNING: By deleting the files and folders, you will be losing all the notes that you created in Notezilla. We hope that you have just installed Notezilla and haven’t created any imported notes. If you have some important notes in Notezilla, then you may export them to separate the “Notezilla Database File” using the File->Export feature. Once you have exported this file, we will import it again in step 4.
  2. Copy all the QNP data files, including “GlobalSettings.qxml” file to the Notezilla’s data folder. Typically, QNP data files may be found under “My Documents\My Notes” folder.
  3. Launch Notezilla. It should import all the QNP notes.
  4. Note go to File->Import in Notezilla Notes Browser and import the files that you exported in step 4.

Quickly create sticky note and paste text from clipboard

Many users have requested for a hotkey to directly create a sticky note with the clipboard text in it.

Actually, there is a way to do this (almost as quick as a single hotkey)

  • Ctrl+Shift+U (Creates a new sticky note in NoteZilla/QNP on the desktop)
  • Ctrl+V (Pastes the clipboard text inside the newly created desktop sticky note)

Try it out. It is very fast.

10 things you may not know about QNP sticky notes

  • You can use Ctrl+Plus and Ctrl+Minus keys to toggle between your favorite sticky note color. Use these keys from inside a sticky note.
  • You can access the note menu, the title menu, and the format menu using the shortcut keys Alt+N, Alt+T, and Alt+F, respectively.
  • The desktop sticky note can have a rich shadow effect (Only on Windows XP systems or higher) To enable this option, go to General Preferences|Notes tab and choose the button “Shadow and Transparency…”.
  • To immediately attach a sticky note to the current application, press Ctrl+Shift+W from inside the sticky note.
  • QNP can be very useful if you log in to many different websites. Just save the username/password to a sticky note and stick the note to that website. Each time you visit that website, the sticky note will popup with the username/password.
  • You can configure QNP such that the note appears immediately when an alarm activates. Just go to General Preferences|Alarms tab and select the option – “Popup ‘Alarm Due’ window when an alarm activates.” The default behavior is that the note will appear only when you click on the animated clock on the taskbar.
  • To paste the unformatted text inside a note, hold shift when pasting the text. For example, you would press Shift+Ctrl+V instead of Ctrl+V. This feature is especially useful when copying and pasting text from a web site.
  • To create a new note based on a particular skin inside a memoboard, hold “Ctrl” and click on the first button of the memoboard toolbar. Make sure you click on the drop-down arrow of the first button.
  • Can you create hyperlinks to local files/folders in a sticky note? For example, if you have a file “C:\My Documents\My Proposal.doc,” type inside a sticky note. The ‘<' and '> ‘characters are required if the path contains spaces.
  • To shutdown QNP from the command line, just run the following command: “C:\Program Files\Conceptworld\QNPlus\QNPlus.exe”/ShutDown. This feature is useful when you need to automatically backup QNP data files to another folder or when synchronizing QNP data files with another computer.
  • Bonus :) I hope you are aware of the new version of QNP called Notezilla. If you haven’t tried Notezilla, then I strongly suggest that you install it on your computer. All notes from QNP will be imported automatically. Also, Notezilla will install it as a separate program so that you can revert to QNP anytime.

    Check Notezilla here.

You can see the comparison between Notezilla and QNP on the webpage: https://www.conceptworld.com/QNP/Compare

Migrating QNP from an old computer to a new computer
